Week 4.1

Final Year Project Research
Hari Raya Break

Information on Fluorescent lamp I have found on the internet.

fluorescent lamp or fluorescent tube is a gas-discharge lamp that uses electricity to excite mercury vapor. The excited mercury atoms produce short-wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor to fluoresce, producing visible light. A fluorescent lamp converts electrical power into useful light more efficiently than an incandescent lamp. Lower energy cost typically offsets the higher initial cost of the lamp. The lamp fixture is more costly because it requires a ballast to regulate the current through the lamp.
While larger fluorescent lamps have been mostly used in commercial or institutional buildings, the compact fluorescent lamp is now available in the same popular sizes as incandescents and is used as an energy-saving alternative in homes.

Week 4

Final Year Project Research

Information on LED Lighting that I have found over the internet.

An LED lamp (or LED light bulb) is a solid-state lamp that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the source of light. LED lamps offer long service life and high energy efficiency, but initial costs are higher than those of fluorescent and incandescent lampsChemical decomposition of LED chips reduces luminous flux over life cycle as with conventional lamps.
The LEDs involved may be conventional semiconductor light-emitting diodes, organic LEDs (OLED), or polymer light-emitting diodes (PLED) devices. However, PLED technologies are not commercially available. Diode technology improves steadily.
LED lamps can be made interchangeable with other types of lamps. Assemblies of high power light-emitting diodes can be used to replace incandescent or fluorescent lamps. Some LED lamps are made with identical bases so that they are directly interchangeable with incandescent bulbs. Since the luminous efficacy (amount of visible light produced per unit of electrical power input) varies widely between LED and incandescent lamps, lamps are usefully marked with their lumen output to allow comparison with other types of lamps. LED lamps are sometimes marked to show the watt rating of an incandescent lamp with approximately the same lumen output, for consumer reference in purchasing a lamp that will provide a similar level of illumination.
Efficiency of LED devices continues to improve, with some chips able to emit more than 100 lumens per watt. LEDs do not emit light in all directions, and their directional characteristics affect the design of lamps. The efficiency of conversion from electric power to light is generally higher than with incandescent lamps. Since the light output of many types of light-emitting diodes is small compared to incandescent and compact fluorescent lamps, in most applications multiple diodes are assembled.

Week 3.3

Final Year Project Research

Discussed with my supervisor about the two LEDs I have bought earlier on. Compared the 5W and 10W LEDs in terms of price, intensity and brightness. In the end of the discussion, we have come out with the casing design of the LED lamp with the suitable number of LEDs that are going to use in the project.

Week 3.2

Final Year Project Research

Having done some research on the internet, I went to Jalan Pasar, KL to get some hands-on on the instruments that I will use later in the project. Luckily, there are several shops in Jalan Pasar that sell LEDs so that I can get the price compared.

I have settled on a shop that specialized in LED lamp installation for houses and offices. I have bought 2 types of LED; 5W and 10W to compare their light intensity and brightness.

Week 3.1

Final Year Project Research

I have started my research for reliable websites to get some official information on LEDs and also fluorescent lamps.

Week 2.2

Final Year Project Title Finalized

After having discussed on a various FYP titles, my supervisor and I have agreed on the topic 'Efficiency of Lighting System Between LED and Fluorescent Lamp'. The topic will touch on the power consumption of LEDs and Fluorescent lamp as conventional use.

Week 2.1

Final Year Project Title

During the FYP briefing, they have reminded us to search for titles that related to our course in BMI and it has to be something that we all comfortable to work on. I have consulted my supervisor (Sir Abdul Halim Abdul Rahman) on a few topics that I have shortlisted and discussed.

The topics that I have shortlisted for FYP are:
1. Energy saving emergency light
2. Night light saver
3. Emergency warning light
4. Organic LED (OLED)
5. Voice-controlled lamp dimmer
6. Motion-controlled light
7. LED keyboard
8. Motion sensor for security light

Week 1

Final Year Project Briefing

Attended the FYP briefing which was held on 31st July 2012 at Dewan Gemilang. The briefing was focusing on the FYP 1 students. We were briefed about what FYP is all about and things related to FYP. The speaker also touched on how to search for FYP titles and also to select a supervisor. The speaker also talked about FYP blog that we need to set up ourselves, to get the supervisor updated. Lastly, the speaker reminded us about the FYP proposal submission and presentation date.
